Nitor is bringing the entire team to FBTB – again! "Sometimes you go to a conference, and you get to listen to really inspirational and cool talks – but they don't really give you anything hands-on to utilize in your daily work. But FBTB delivered inspiration that was possible to act on" says Annika Madejska, Senior Designer.
The Nitor team are regular visitors at FBTB. We had a chat with Annika Madejska, Senior Designer at Nitor in Helsinki. This year, they are sending most of their design team to FBTB.
What are you looking forward to this years’ FBTB?
— Those of us who are participating in workshops are of course looking forward to those, but generally, the theme of sustainability and ethics really resonated with us as we're stepping up our game in those areas. We've signed the WWF Green Office and we have been approved for United Nations Global Compact CoP Early Adopter Programme amongst other things. Since before we have had a lot of emphasis on employee well-being and keeping a sustainable pace at work. These are areas that are very important to us and we want to be part of the open discussion and forming of our future with technology. This year's FBTB conference felt like it really hit the target for us.
Nitor invests a great deal in competence development. From conferences to internal shared learning sessions, lunches, and courses.
— Competence development is crucial to us. We have 5 conference days per year for external education which we're very much encouraged to use. Each year we have what we call a Crystal Ball session where we identify what topics are up and coming in all our business areas. Those then become topics that we actively encourage Nitoreans to focus their skill development on. We also have strong shared learning practices with Lightning Talks and special forums for interest areas such as front-end development, cloud services, accessibility, sustainability, and many more, says Annika Madejska.
Do you have a favorite memory from past years' FBTB?
— Personally, I have great memories from Christopher Noessel's workshop on agentive AI. Shortly after that workshop, I started working on an AI project myself, so it was really great timing for me. The conference itself, we remember as very well organized and well produced. Jake Knapp, Kim Goodwin, and Mark Stickdorn all delivered very memorable talks. FBTB felt like it gave us actionable new insights. Sometimes you go to a conference, and you get to listen to really inspirational and cool talks – but they don't really give you anything hands-on to utilize in your daily work. But FBTB delivered inspiration that was possible to act on.
With offices in both Helsinki and Stockholm, do you do anything else together when the team is all gathered in Stockholm?
– Some of us will fly in a day early and work from our Stockholm office together with our Sweden-based colleagues. As company culture is important to us it is also crucial that our colleagues in Sweden have a solid connection to our HQ in Helsinki, and this trip gives us an opportunity to hang out together and just build those important connections.
– We also have a strong tradition of a visit to Mr Cake which is non-negotiable.
